Prepare to meet nuns who worship at the altar of Cheech & Chong. A trailer has dropped for “Breaking Habits.” Currently screening at the Cannes market, the documentary follows nuns with a green thumb. The feature has already sold in multiple territories, according to Deadline.
“After all of the men in my life betrayed me, beat me, left me penniless and homeless, my goal was to form a sisterhood of healers to heal the valley,” former corporate exec Christine Meeusen explains. “Before long I was surrounded by these incredible like-minded women who believed in the healing powers of cannabis.”
The Sisters of the Valley refer to one another as Sisters and dress like nuns, but they are self-ordained. They are, in Meeusen’s words, “serious women on a serious mission” — to help people in pain by selling medicinal marijuana.
The Sisters are making lots of money in the process, but have made enemies of local law enforcement, clergy, and drug cartels. Still, Meeusen won’t back down. “When people have everything taken away, you should be scared — because they will do some radical shit,” she warns.
For another look at trailblazing nuns check out Rebecca Parrish’s “Radical Grace.” The 2015 doc chronicles three feminist nuns who challenge the conservatism of the Catholic Church through their social-justice work, which includes protests for women’s equality in the church and raising awareness about economic disparity.
“Breaking Habits” will be ready for release in 2018.
