Cannes Watch: Woman With a Camera

Here’s a video that interviews women about the lack of women directors in Cannes. It is created by Donna Don.

Here’s why she made it:

To draw attention to the appalling low number of female directors and most importantly the implications to the viewer.

I am hugely concerned that although women constitute slightly more than 50% of the population worldwide in the film industry we are a minority behind the camera and in front of the camera as far as being the principal protagonists. Our stories and viewpoints are marginalized.

I conducted over 20 interviews with female directors (and a few female producers) from more than a dozen different countries over a 3 year period. All responses were unscripted and the end three minutes are totally representative off the majority of interviews.

It was my intention to make a full length documentary but in the end I decided that I wanted to keep it short and to the point in the hope that it would reach the widest audience and thus the “unconverted.”

I also made it as a short sharp reminder for those of us already aware of these issues that nothing has improved, so that whatever measures that are being taken to address these, need to amplified or re-worked and new measures need to be devised.

All the interview are from 2010 when there were also no women directors at Cannes. So basically it shows that nothing has changed.
