Carol Morley has been named the 2015 Wellcome Trust Screenwriting Fellowship recipient.
Best known as the writer-director of the 2014 fainting-epidemic drama “The Falling,” Morley also penned and helmed the narrative feature “Edge,” as well as the documentaries “Dreams of a Life” and “The Alcohol Years.”
Now in its third year, the Wellcome Trust Screenwriting Fellowship seeks to bring film and science in closer contact. The honor comes with a £30,000 cash prize and includes access and/or introductions to science and medical leaders, visits to research institutions and programs and a personal MRI brain scan and genome analysis. In partnership with BFI and Film4, its inaugural awardee was filmmaker Clio Barnard in 2013.
A senior executive at the BFI Film Fund commented, “Carol’s extraordinary body of work demonstrates her fascination with the human condition. Time and again she has shown a deep compassion for our flaws and wonderment at the strength of our humanity. The prospect of Carol immersing herself in Wellcome’s incredible collections and resources makes our hearts leap, and we can’t wait to see how this year will help provoke and inspire the next steps on Carol’s creative journey.”
