Still reeling from Patricia Clarkson’s disturbing turn in “Sharp Objects”? The Oscar-nominated actress’ latest feature is another dark story involving murder and family tragedy, and it just secured distribution. IFC Films snagged U.S. rights to detective noir “Out of Blue,” ScreenDaily confirms.
Written and directed by Carol Morley, the film premiered at the this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and tells the story of a homicide detective investigating the shooting of an astrophysicist and black hole expert (Mamie Gummer, “The Good Wife”). The case destabilizes her view of the universe and herself.
A 2019 theatrical release is planned.
“With a fantastic lead performance by Patricia Clarkson, ‘Out of Blue’ is a highly cerebral and brilliant new addition to the film noir canon. We’re thrilled to bring Carol Morley’s film to audiences across the U.S., ” said IFC Films co-presidents Jonathan Sehring and Lisa Schwartz.
Morley added, “I am so happy that ‘Out of Blue’ has found such a warm welcome and home at IFC. For me it is my dream North American distributor. Many of the films that they have released over the years are films I love, by filmmakers that I am a fan of, so to join their ranks is a real honor.”
“Out of Blue” is an adaptation of Martin Amis’ 1997 novel “Night Train.” “I was attracted to the book because there was a female lead detective, and I was excited to expand on her, and make a film about a complex woman who owns the investigative gaze,” Morley told us. “The book intrigued me because of the themes of cosmology and black holes, but it was also grounded in a police procedural — so it was doing a number of things at once.”
Morley’s other credits include “The Falling,” “Edge,” and doc “Dreams of a Life.”
“House of Cards,” “The Bookshop,” and “The Party” are among Clarkson’s recent credits.
