Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska are set to star in Carol–an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt. Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay and Todd Haynes is set to direct.
The film will focus on the relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. One is a rich housewife, who is desperate to leave her marriage, but doesn’t want to destroy her family in the process. The other is a twentysomething woman who works in a department store.
Highsmith’s novel–which was released in the heyday of lesbian pulp novels–was extremely progressive at the time. That excellent source material coupled with the talents of Blanchett and Wasikowska is certain to make a great film.
The Weinstein Company has already acquired the U.S. rights.
