Cate Blanchett to Play Lucille Ball in Authorized Biopic

Cate Blanchett isn’t known for her comedic roles, but that may change after she stars in her most recently announced project: a biopic about the life of Lucille Ball.

One of the most famous women in television, Ball has become a cultural icon after starring in five shows named after her: “I Love Lucy,” “The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour,” “The Lucy Show,” “Here’s Lucy” and “Life With Lucy.” Ball’s small-screen career took off with the debut of “I Love Lucy” in 1951, when Ball was 40. The actress-comedienne worked into her septuagenarian years, was nominated for 13 Emmys and four of them.

The film will be produced by Jenna Block and Ball’s children with husband Desi Arnaz, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.

Aaron Sorkin is reportedly the top choice to pen the project.

Blanchett will appear this fall in the highly anticipated ’50s lesbian romance “Carol” and the news scandal drama “Truth.” She won her first Oscar for playing another Hollywood legend, Katharine Hepburn, in “The Aviator.”
