After taking on drug cartels in “Miss Bala,” the Big Bad Wolf in “Red Riding Hood,” and vampires in “Twilight,” Catherine Hardwicke is set to direct another genre pic. She’s signed on to helm fantasy-adventure epic “Heathen” for Constatin Film and Prime Universe Films, Deadline confirms.
An adaptation of the Vault Comics series by Natasha Alterici, the feature tells the story of Aydis, “a fierce Viking warrior who is scorned by her village for kissing another woman and, after much suffering, declares war on Odin himself.” Aydis is “born into a time of warfare, suffering, and subjugation of women,” the source details.
Kerry Williamson (“What Happened to Monday?”) is penning the script for “Heathen.”
“Thirteen,” “Lords of Dogtown,” and “Miss You Already” are among Hardwicke’s other features. She’s spoken out about how her most commercially successful film, “Twilight,” has encouraged the franchise’s millions of fans to broaden their conceptions of what a filmmaker looks like. “I’ve … had people see me introducing the deleted scenes on the DVD and tell me that they saw a woman director and thought that they could be a director too,” she revealed.
