Cathy Yan is currently on post-production on “Suicide Squad” spinoff “Birds of Prey,” but the writer-director has already signed on to her next project. She’ll follow up the Harley Quinn standalone pic with A24’s “Sour Hearts,” Variety reports.
Based on Jenny Zhang’s acclaimed short-story collection, the coming-of-age drama is told from “the perspective of a girl growing up in the outer boroughs of New York in the ’90s. With parents newly arrived from Shanghai, the family works through the unique trials of ascending to the middle class,” the source details. “Sour Hearts” will depict “the humility and heartache of the immigrant experience, as told from the point of view of children and parents.” Zhang and Yan are writing the script.
A24 is also financing and distributing the pic.
Yang made her feature debut with 2018’s “Dead Pigs.” When we asked the writer-director what advice she’d give other female filmmakers, she urged, “Don’t let the fear and the odds consume you. Don’t blame the system — change the system. Hire women in every position that you can, because of their talent,” she emphasized. “On ‘Dead Pigs,’ at least half of my department heads were women. My agents are all women. As a director, you have the power to pick the people you surround yourself with.”
Margot Robbie-starrer “Birds of Prey” hits theaters February 7, 2020. The comic adaptation sees Harley Quinn joining forces with superheroes Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to take on a crime kingpin.
