Cathy Yan will follow up her tribute to Harley Quinn’s fantabulous emancipation — and breakfast sandwiches — with a sci-fi love story. The “Birds of Prey” helmer is set to write and direct “The Freshening” for FilmNation. Variety broke the news.
Based on Rachel Khong’s short story, “The Freshening” is “set in a near future where tensions over race and gender have reached a violent extreme,” the source details. The U.S. government “institutes a public health initiative known as ‘The Freshening’: every American receives an injection, after which everyone only sees others as the same race and gender as themselves. But when a street drug hits the scene, promising a chance to see the world as it really is, will she choose to disrupt this ‘freshened’ world?”
“When we read ’The Freshening’ we were blown away by this timely and provocative story. Developing this film with Cathy and all of our fantastic partners is going to be a one-of-a-kind experience in filmmaking,” said FilmNation Entertainment’s President, Film & Television Production Ben Browning and SVP of Production Ashley Fox.
Yan added, “’The Freshening’ is exactly the type of daring and timely film that excites me as a writer and director.” She and Ash Sarohia are among the project’s producers, and will be producing via their Rewild banner.
Yan made her feature debut with “Dead Pigs,” a 2018 Sundance pic that sees thousands of dead pigs floating down the river toward Shanghai. The dramedy will be released on MUBI February 12. She most recently worked on Margot Robbie-starrer “Birds of Prey,” a standalone Harley Quinn movie that hit theaters last year.
When we asked Yan her advice for other women directors she said, “It’s pretty much inevitable that we will be underestimated, judged more harshly, and deemed more ‘difficult’ at some point in our careers, so don’t get too affected by that crap and focus on defending your vision and your art.”
