CBS Orders Military Family Pilot from Writer Becky Mode and Exec Producer Sarah Timberman

CBS has ordered a pilot centered on two influential families in a military community from former “Smash” writer Becky Mode.

“Four Stars” is set in Tampa, Florida, where the high-ranking military elites strive to protect national security. You’d think that responsibility would require a lot of the armed forces — so much that they wouldn’t have time to feud with fellow military families. But the families at the heart of the show are rivals. (We’d bet that the clans are divided politically, and that’s what’s causing some of the drama. A left-leaning military officer would have different ideas about how best to defend the country than, say, a staunch Republican.)

We’ve noticed a trend in the past year or so: an unusually high number of women-in-war films loom on the horizon, including but not limited to adaptations of Gayle Tzemach Lemmon’s “Ashley’s War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield” and Lynsey Addario’s “It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War.” (Jennifer Lawrence will star in the latter.)

So it’s a good time to get on the war story/military bandwagon. Apparently the entertainment industry senses a demand for these stories.

Variety doesn’t specify whether the military officers on “Four Stars” will be men and/or women, but we have a hunch that at least one of these characters will be female.

CBS Television Studios will produce “Four Stars.” Mode, who is also a playwright, will exec produce the series with Sarah Timberman (“Elementary,” “Masters of Sex”), Carl Beverly and RJ Cutler.
