Celine Song is set to make her feature directorial debut. The “Endings” playwright will write and direct Korean romance “Past Lives” for A24. Collider broke the news.
Described as “an original love story about childhood sweethearts who meet in Korea and live parallel lives until they reunite and see what could have been years later,” the pic is expected to start shooting this spring.
Song is a staff writer on Amazon’s upcoming series adaptation of “The Wheel of Time.” Rosamund Pike stars in the fantasy epic set in a world where magic exists and only some women are allowed to access it. Her play “Endlings,” the story of three elderly sea women living in the Korean Island of Man-Jae, made its world premiere in 2019 at American Repertory Theater, and it will have its New York premiere in February 2020 at New York Theatre Workshop. Her play “Tom & Eliza” was a semifinalist for the American Playwriting Foundation’s 2016 Relentless Award.
“Parasite,” a Korean dark comedy exploring class and greed, is up for six Oscars including Best Picture, and has taken in over $30 million stateside and more than $160 million worldwide, proving yet again that diversity sells.
