Charlize Theron to Receive Honor at Palm Springs Film Festival

Theron in "Bombshell"

Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January 13, but “Bombshell” favorite Charlize Theron has just been named as the recipient of the International Star Award, Actress at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). She’ll receive the honor at the fest’s Film Awards Gala, slated for January 2. A press release confirmed the news.

Theron’s “Bombshell” co-star Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, and Saoirse Ronan are among the previous recipients of the International Star Award. No stranger to PSIFF herself, Theron previously nabbed the fest’s Desert Palm Achievement Award in 2006 and the Vanguard Award in 2012.

“Over the years, Charlize Theron has created so many memorable roles including her performances in ‘Monster,’ ‘North Country,’ ‘Young Adult,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘Atomic Blonde,’ ‘Tully,’ and so much more,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In her latest film, ‘Bombshell,’ she gives yet another award-worthy performance through her striking physical transformation of her portrayal as Megyn Kelly. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is honored to present the International Star Award to Charlize Theron.”

A two-time Oscar nominee, Theron took home the prize for “Monster” and received a nod for “North Country.”

“Bombshell” opens in limited release December 13, before hitting more theaters December 20. The drama is based on real events and depicts how Kelly and other women helped take down Fox News boss Roger Ailes and the toxic, sexist culture he promoted. In addition to starring, Theron produced the pic.

PSIFF 2020 runs from January 2-13. “Judy’s” Renée Zellweger is set to receive the fest’s Desert Palm Achievement Award.
