Charlotte Rampling to Receive Honorary Golden Bear at Berlinale

Rampling in "45 Years"

The 2019 Berlin International Film Festival will pay tribute to Charlotte Rampling, Variety confirms. The Oscar-nominated star is set to receive an honorary Golden Bear at the 69th edition of the Berlinale. Since launching her screen career in 1965, Rampling has spent the next five decades-plus acting in over 100 film and TV roles as well as stage productions.

“The fest will also pay homage to Rampling by screening a selection of her work, including Sidney Lumet’s ‘The Verdict’ (1982), Francois Ozon’s ‘Swimming Pool’ (2003), and Andrea Pallaoro’s ‘Hannah’ (2017),” the source writes.

Rampling will receive her honor February 14 at a ceremony following a screening of Liliana Cavani’s 1974 drama “The Night Porter,” a story about a Holocaust survivor (Rampling) and the Nazi officer who tortured her.

“I’m very happy that this year’s homage is dedicated to the sublime actress Charlotte Rampling,” said Dieter Kosslick, the director of the Berlinale. “She is an icon of unconventional and exciting cinema.”

Lone Scherfig’s latest, Zoe Kazan-starrer “The Kindness of Strangers,” will open this year’s Berlinale and screen in Competition. Other Competition titles include Marie Kreutzer’s “The Ground Beneath My Feet,” a drama about a powerful business consultant, and Angela Schanelec’s “I Was at Home, but,” the story of a 13-year-old who disappears then returns under mysterious circumstances. Juliette Binoche is serving as president of the International Jury.

Rampling won the Silver Bear in 2015 for her Oscar-nominated role in “45 Years” and served as president of the Berlinale jury in 2006.

“Red Sparrow” and “Euphoria” are among Rampling’s latest films. Her best known TV credits include “Broadchurch” and “Dexter.” She’s currently filming “Benedetta,” a feature about a 17th century nun.

The Berlinale runs from February 7-17.
