Chloë Sevigny’s Directorial Debut Headlines Refinery29 Female Filmmaker Short Film Series

Lifestyle website Refinery29 is putting female filmmakers in the spotlight with a series of short films.

The appropriately named ShatterBox Anthology promises to showcase the work of an array of young female creatives, with Chloë Sevigny’s directorial debut the first project to be announced.

Sevigny’s “Kitty,” a short film she adapted from a story by Paul Bowles, is currently in post-production. It tells the intriguing tale of a young girl named Kitty who finds herself mysteriously transformed into her animal namesake. Ione Skye (“Say Anything”) and Lee Meriwether (“Barnaby Jones”) co-star, and Christina Piovesan and Lizzie Nastro are producing in collaboration with executive producers Refinery29 and Tidal.

Sevigny’s film is the first of 12 shorts that ShatterBox Anthology will feature throughout the year, beginning in the spring. The ShatterBox Anthology program is being produced with the creative support of the Sundance Institute, whose “findings around sustainability for women within the film industry… struck a personal chord,” chief content officer for Refinery29 Amy Emmerich said. Emmerich expressed her excitement at being in a position to “drive change utilizing the power of the Refinery29 platform,” emphasizing that “this is a critical issue that has finally made its way into the public consciousness, and while there is a growing movement to support female creators, there is so much more to be done.”

Experienced independent producers Christine Vachon (“Carol”) and Pamela Koffler (“Still Alice”) have also been brought on board as advisers to the ShatterBox program, which is far from being the first female-driven project to come out of Refinery29. It is also behind Jessie Kahnweiler’s web series “The Skinny,” which boasts executive producers Jill Soloway, Andrea Sperling and Rebecca Odes and had its premiere at Sundance on Tuesday.
