Chrissy Metz is eyeing the top of Africa’s highest mountain. The “This Is Us” breakout is set to produce — and possibly star — in a film adaptation of Kara Richardson Whitely’s memoir “Gorge: My Journey Up Kilimanjaro at 300 Pounds” for Amazon Studios. Deadline broke the news.
Published in 2015, “Gorge” sees Whiteley embarking on a mission to reach Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit and conquer her self-doubt along the way. “She struggled with each step — with the grueling conditions on the steep mountainside, with the 300-pound weight of her own body, and with her food addiction that came from a lifetime of reckoning with feelings of failure and shame. Deep in her personal gorge, Kara realized the only way out was up,” the source summarizes.
“I knew there was a story in my Kilimanjaro climbs,” Whitley has said. “I wrote ‘Gorge’ knowing that two-thirds of people in the United States are overweight or obese. I felt comfortable sharing my experience knowing I’m not the only one. So many people struggle with food, and I’m hoping this touches them.”
No word on who will write or direct the inspirational pic.
“Gorge’s” producers also include Denise Di Novi, Nina Tassler, Margaret French Isaac, and Lena Roklin.
Metz received an Emmy nod in 2017 for her role as Kate Pearson on “This Is Us.” The family drama is currently in its fourth season on NBC. “Breakthrough,” “Sierra Burgess is a Loser,” and “American Horror Story” are among Metz’s other credits.
