The legend continues — and evolves. A female-led reimagining of “Kung Fu” is in development at The CW, Deadline reports. Inspired by the original 1970s David Carradine-starrer, the hour-long project is penned by “Blindspot” writer and exec producer Christina M. Kim and hails from Warner Bros. Television, where she’s under an overall deal.
The new take on the story follows a young Chinese-American woman. Her quarter-life crisis causes her to “drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to find her hometown overrun with crime and corruption, she uses her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice … all while searching for the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her,” the source summarizes.
Kim is among the project’s exec producers. “Hawaii Five-0,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” and “Lost” are among her other credits.
The original “Kung Fu” aired from 1972 to 1975. The martial arts drama served as the inspiration for follow-up series “Kung Fu: The Next Generation” and “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.”
