Claire Denis is back from space and heading to Cannes. The French filmmaker has been named as President of the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Films and Cinéfondation Jury, a press release announced. The section is comprised of short and student films chosen by the Cinefondation to screen in competition.
Along with her jury, Denis will award the three prizes of the Cinéfondation among the 17 film students’ works presented on May 23. On May 25, she’ll award the Short Film Palme d’Or at the fest’s Closing Ceremony.
“High Life,” Denis’ most recent film, opens in LA and NY today. The sci-fi sees Juliette Binoche playing a mad scientist leading a doomed and unethical mission in deep space, where she’s experimenting on death row inmates. Denis has screened a number of her own films at Cannes, including “Chocolat” and “Bastards.”
BAM is currently hosting a retrospective celebrating the “Beau Travail” filmmaker. “Strange Desire: The Films of Claire Denis” kicked off March 29 and continues through April 9, marking the largest-ever U.S. retrospective of her work.
The 72nd edition of Cannes will take place from May 14-25. “Capernaum” writer-director Nadine Labacki will serve as chair of the Un Certain Regard Jury.
