Claire Scanlon has kicked off production on her sophomore feature. She’s following up her 2018 Netflix hit “Set It Up” with another rom-com, “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” an Amazon Original Film that’s shooting in London. The film counts Oscar winner Allison Janney and “Good Place” alumna Kristen Bell among its cast. A press release confirmed the news.

“The People We Hate at the Wedding” follows “struggling American siblings Alice (Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt), who reluctantly agree to attend the wedding of their estranged, wealthy half-sister in the English countryside alongside their mother, Donna (Janney),” the film’s official synopsis details. “Over the course of the wedding week, the family’s many skeletons are wrenched from the closet, and the unlikely reunion gives everyone the motivation to move their own lives forward. A modern wedding comedy for anyone with a slightly dysfunctional family (everyone), or anyone who’s been forced to attend a wedding they tried to avoid (also everyone).”

Scanlon’s extensive list of TV directing credits includes episodes of “Never Have I Ever,” “GLOW,” and “Black-ish.”

Janney won an Oscar for her supporting role in “I, Tonya.” The seven-time Emmy winner’s TV credits include “Mom” and “The West Wing.”

Bell reprised her role as narrator in HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” reboot. The teen series has been renewed for a second season. Her latest feature, Gita Pullapilly and Aron Gaudet’s “Queenpins,” a comedy about women who run a coupon scam, hit theaters September 10 and starts streaming on Paramount+ September 30.
