Claudia Llosa to set to make history. Again. She’s been tapped to become the first Peruvian filmmaker to direct a Netflix film, Deadline reports. Best known as the helmer of “The Milk of Sorrow” — the first Peruvian film to receive an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film — Llosa will direct “Distancia De Rescate” for the streamer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project’s English title is “Fever Dream.”
Based on Samantha Schweblin’s novel “Fever Dream,” the story is set in a rural community in Argentina and “explores a community of broken souls, toxins, looming environmental and spiritual catastrophes, and the ties that bind a parent to a child,” THR summarizes. Llosa and Schweblin penned the script.
Production is scheduled to kick off in Chile in early 2019.
Mark Johnson and Tom Williams are producing for Gran Via Production, with Juan and Pablo Larrain’s Fabula Productions.
“This is a truly international partnership featuring an Argentine story, filmed in Chile, from a Peruvian director partnering with an American production company; it’s a great example of our ongoing aim to provide storytellers from around the world with a platform to reach movie lovers everywhere,” said Ian Bricke, co-head of the independent film team at Netflix.
2014 Jennifer Connelly-starrer “Aloft” and 2006’s “Madeinusa” are among Llosa’s other credits.
