“CODA,” “Zola,” and More to Screen at Sundance Film Festival: London

"Zola": Sundance Institute/Anna Kooris

The most celebrated film of Sundance 2021 is heading across the pond. “CODA,” which made history as the first film to ever receive all three top U.S. Dramatic honors out of Park City, will make its U.K. premiere at Sundance Film Festival: London. The fest’s lineup was just announced, and “CODA” is among the 15 features from Park City, Utah’s Sundance Film Festival selected for London by the Sundance Institute programming team in collaboration with Picturehouse.

Written and directed by Siân Heder, the coming-of-age drama tells the story of 17-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones), the only hearing member in a Deaf family. She’s torn between pursuing her passion for music and her sense of obligation to her family and their fishing business.

“CODA” won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic, and Heder took home the Directing Award: U.S. Dramatic. The film also nabbed a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast.

The critically acclaimed pic scored a record-breaking deal from Apple out of the fest.

Set to take place July 29-August 1, Sundance: London’s other women-directed offerings include Janicza Bravo’s “Zola” and Nanfu Wang’s “In the Same Breath.” The former is a comedy inspired by a viral Twitter thread and tells the story of a Detroit waitress who is lured to Florida by a customer with promises of big money and parties, and the latter is a documentary exploring reactions to the COVID-19 crisis in China and the U.S.
