I’ll be participating in two events in NYC this week that people can attend. Both events are free.
The first is Thursday evening March 14th at 7pm sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. It’s entitled: Changing Landscapes: An Evening with Female Directors. I will be moderating a stellar panel of female directors from theatre film and TV including:

Here’s the description of the panel:
According to recent DGA statistics, 95% of feature films are directed by men and only 5% by women. More than 3100 episodes were produced in the 2011-2012 network season and 2011 cable television series but only 15% of these episodes were directed by women. According to a recent New York Times article, women direct only 15 to 20% of the Broadway shows, a number that is considered a slight improvement to most of the last century. Although the disparity is clear, a generation of women is changing the directorial landscape. The groundwork is being laid for a new game to be played in the business. Join us for an inspiring and academic evening with women at the top of their careers in TV, Film and Theater. Hear them speak their minds on why they do what they do, how they did it and where the tide is turning.
This event is presented in partnership with the New School for Drama in celebration of Women’s History Month.

On Saturday, I will participate in a NYWIFT co-sponsored panel: Ethics of Representation in Media: The Status of Women as part of a CUNY conference on Global Media: Ethics of Representation, exploring our culture’s values as they pertain to the creation of media.
Panelists in addition to myself include:
Marjorie Rosen, author and journalist, Popcorn Venus: Women, Movies, and the American Dream
Susan Seidelman, director of The Hot Flashes, starring Brooke Shields, which is scheduled for release this year.
Jae Je Simmons is the New York Executive Director of SAG-AFTRA.
Dorothy Rompalske (moderator) is a writer/filmmaker and an adjunct assistant professor in the Film Department at Brooklyn College.
Here’s the description:
This panel will look at the representation of women in film and television and the consequences of such stereotyping in a society where media plays a powerful part in shaping our cultural norms. We will explore the impact that increasing the number of women working behind the scenes in positions of authority has on the number and diversity of female characters, and discuss whether or not improving female roles on screen translates to a greater quality of life and more real world opportunities for women and girls.
