Canadian comedian Mae Martin’s life will serve as the inspiration of a new comedy series. Martin created and is signed on to star in a semi-autobiographical scripted series for Netflix and British broadcaster Channel 4, Deadline confirms.
Titled “Mae and George,” the six-part series tells the story of Mae, a recovering addict and comedian determined to “control the addictive behaviors and intense romanticism that permeate every facet of her life. Life is further complicated by a new and all consuming relationship with her new girlfriend George.” Described as “deeply personal” and “darkly hilarious,” the series will explore “the modern-day fluid landscape of gender and sexuality,” according to the source.
“When we think about addiction we just think about drugs. But love is also an addiction. When I broke up with someone two years ago getting over it felt so similar to getting over cocaine. There was the same relapsing, withdrawal symptoms,” Martin has revealed.
Ally Pankiw (“Schitt’s Creek”) is directing “Mae and George,” and Martin will co-write alongside Joe Hampson (“Skins”). The series is set to air on E4 in the UK and stream on Netflix across the globe — excluding the UK. Objective Fiction’s Kelly McGolpin (“Chewing Gum”) is producing.
“We cannot wait to make this show with E4, Netflix, and Objective Fiction – what a dream,” said Martin. “I’m especially pumped to be co-writing ‘Mae and George’ with my best friend Joe Hampson. He has such an incredible head of hair. We are excited to make a show that is both funny and sad, like our lives, and I hope they’ve factored therapy into the budget because I’m already hanging by a thread.”
Martin’s debut book, “Can Everyone Please Calm Down?: A Guide to 21st Century Sexuality,” will hit shelves in May. She’s a two-time Canadian Screen Award winner for her writing on CBC’s “Baroness von Sketch Show.”
