Before she rose to stardom as the co-creator and star of musical dramedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Rachel Bloom launched her career on YouTube. Now the Golden Globe winner is taking on another medium. She’s set to publish her first book with Grand Central Publishing, Entertainment Weekly reports.
While the book is as-yet untitled, the publisher promises that it will contain “hilarious, irreverent, and deeply relatable personal essays, fictional stories, poems, opinions, and more.”
Bloom’s description of the book is decidedly more colorful: “I can’t wait to write this sordid tell-all book in which I plan to put my enemies on blast and, on the flip side, elevate those who are loyal to me to the status of gods among men,” she joked in a release. “You will learn about my 15 divorces, multiple lip transplants, and all the details of that fateful night I whispered to George R.R. Martin, ‘What if you wrote a thing about royalty and zombies and it was also super cold?’ When this book appears on shelves, only the worthy may read it; the rest who dare lay eyes on even the introduction will instantly melt into the earth. Also, there may be an embarrassing story about my period, LOL :)”
The book is tentatively scheduled to hit shelves in Spring 2019, and we’re betting that Bloom will cover a lot of varied ground with her typical candor. Regarding her childhood, Bloom has said, “I was very loud, very obnoxious. I was made fun of quite a lot. My friend at school once wrote an essay on me, and it was something like, ‘While the rest of us were going to sleepovers and having friends, Rachel was at singing classes.’”
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has received a lot of praise for its depiction of mental illness, and Bloom has spoken openly about her own experiences with anxiety and depression. “The thing that has most aided me through my anxiety and depression is realizing I’m not alone,” she’s explained. “I’m naturally bubbly, even when I’m sad. But here’s what people can’t see: During a spiral the world feels dark. I have anxiety about anxiety, then I worry the anxiety will ruin my life. It’s a snake-eats-tail loop. But in opening up to others, I found a lot of people have felt the same way.”
The third season of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” will premiere on the CW sometime this year. Bloom plays Rebecca Bunch, an Ivy League-educated lawyer who radically changes her life after a chance encounter with Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III), her first love from summer camp. After he tells her he’s leaving New York for West Covina, California, she decides to quit her prominent New York law firm and do the same — hence the show’s title, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” But as Bloom sings in the opening credits of the show, “That’s a sexist term” and “The situation’s a lot more nuanced than that.”
Bloom won a Golden Globe in 2016 for her role in “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and received another nomination this year.
