“Crazy Rich Asians” & “The Wife” Among 22 Films to Receive ReFrame’s Gender Equality Stamp

"Crazy Rich Asians"

ReFrame has bestowed its stamp of approval to 22 more films. Introduced earlier this summer, the stamp is given to films and TV projects that hire female-identifying individuals on both sides of the camera. According to Variety, rom-com hit “Crazy Rich Asians,” Glenn Close-starrer “The Wife,” and Haifaa Al-Mansour’s biopic “Mary Shelley” are among the new stamp recipients.

Projects being considered for the ReFrame Stamp are judged by a point system. Using data from IMDbPro, ReFrame, a project sponsored in part by the Sundance Institute and Women in Film, examines the prevalence of women in on-screen and off-screen roles. Additional points are awarded when women of color are hired.

ReFrame analyzed the top 100 films of 2017 for its first round of stamps. Twelve films, including “Girls Trip,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Lady Bird,” made the cut. The organization then asked for studio and indie films that have secured U.S. release to be submitted for consideration.

“I’m extremely proud to be part of a film with so many talented and determined women involved in its creation,” Close said of “The Wife.” “The producers and screenwriter, all women, never gave up on getting it made, even though it took 14 years. The sensitive and powerful film editing, costume design, haunting score, all by women, come together to create a moving and cohesive work of cinema.” She continued, “I hope that its success, and this recognition by ReFrame, will encourage more hiring of women and more women to follow their passion to make films.”

Paul Feig, whose upcoming Anna Kendrick-Blake Lively mystery “A Simple Favor” also received the stamp, stated, “As a supporter and member of the ReFrame team, as well as a filmmaker working toward the goal of inclusivity and parity in front of and behind the camera, having the ReFrame stamp on my latest film is as important to me as making sure I have film in the camera.” He added, “The ReFrame seal of approval is something all studios, producers, and directors should strive for. It’s not that hard to do.”
