Crystal + Lucy Awards to Honor Brie Larson, Channing Dungey, and More

Women In Film, Los Angeles (WIF LA) has announced this year’s honorees for the Crystal + Lucy Awards. Brie Larson, Channing Dungey, Alexandra Shipp, and NOVA Wav (Denisia “Blue June” Andrews and Brittany “Chi” Coney) will be paid tribute at the annual fundraising dinner. The event will take place June 13 in Beverly Hills.

Larson will receive The Crystal Award for Excellence in Film. The Oscar-winning “Room” star most recently appeared in “The Glass Castle,” an adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ best-selling 2005 memoir. Her feature directorial debut “Unicorn Store” premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The coming-of-age comedy sees Larson playing a unicorn-obsessed woman whose childhood dream comes true. Up next she’ll make history as the star of Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, “Captain Marvel,” slated to bow March 6, 2019.

Dungey is set to take home The Lucy Award for Excellence in Television. As president of ABC Entertainment, she oversees development, programming, marketing, and scheduling for the network. She’s helped shepherd in hits such as the “Roseanne” reboot and “The Good Doctor” and reinvigorate long-running series such as Ellen Pompeo-starrer “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The Women In Film Max Mara Face of the Future Award is going to Shipp. Best known for her role as Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” the rising star will reprise her role in “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” set to hit theaters February 14, 2019. She can currently be seen in coming out story “Love, Simon,” in theaters now. Shipp co-stars in Olivia Milch’s “Dude,” a comedy about four female friends about to graduate high school that recently dropped on Netflix. Her other credits include “Straight Outta Compton” and “Tragedy Girls.”

NOVA Wav will accept The Women In Film Artistic Excellence Award. The Grammy-nominated duo are among the only female songwriting/production teams in the music industry. They’ve worked with artists such as Beyoncé,  Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and Kelly Clarkson. They wrote two songs for Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” “I Believe” and “Let Me Live.”

The event will recognize WIF LA’s 45th anniversary with a “45 years of Advocacy Celebration” segment presented by Frances McDormand.

“Throughout its history, Women In Film has focused its efforts on the kind of gender advocacy that is now sweeping through the screen industries like a tidal wave,” said WIF LA President Cathy Schulman. “The theme of this year’s Crystal + Lucy Awards Gala is ‘Ignited,’ referencing the tipping point we’re living in and Women In Film’s responsibility as a thought leader to keep the flame burning for a sustainable future — freed from the constraints of gender bias.”

Last year’s Crystal + Lucy honorees included “Pitch Perfect 2” director and actress Elizabeth Banks, “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross, and “Queen of Katwe” helmer Mira Nair.

Since its founding in 1973, Women in Film had advocated for women working in film, TV, and digital media with programs including mentoring, writing labs, and film finishing funds.
