Cynthia Erivo will have the chance to show off her acting and vocal chops in “Talent Show.” The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the two-time Oscar nominee is set to topline the Universal musical drama. Emmy winner Lena Waithe wrote the latest version of the script, and Gandja Monteiro is directing.
“Talent Show” will see Erivo playing a failed songwriter who returns to home to Chicago “to lead a group of at-risk youth in their annual talent show.”
Waithe is among the project’s exec producers.
Erivo was last seen on the big screen in Kasi Lemmons’ “Harriet.” She received Oscar nods in two categories for her work in the Harriet Tubman biopic: Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song). She sang on-screen in the pic, as well as in “Bad Times at the El Royale.”
“The Outsider” and “Widows” are among Erivo’s other acting credits. The Tony winner will play Aretha Franklin in National Geographic’s “Genius.” She’s also signed on to star in and produce “Carrier,” a sci-fi thriller based on the podcast of the same name.
In 2017 Waithe won an Emmy for co-writing “Master of None’s” “Thanksgiving” episode, which was inspired by her own coming out process. The “Chi” and “Twenties” creator made her feature screenwriting debut with last year’s “Queen & Slim.”
“Talent Show” will mark Monteiro’s feature debut. She’s directed episodes of “Vida,” “The Chi,” and “In the Dark,” among other series.
