Akilah Green, of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and “Perfect Harmony,” is heading to “Nate’s.” She is writing and executive producing a half-hour multi-cam comedy set at Nate’s, a popular Washington, D.C., watering hole. ABC has put the project into development and 20th Television is the studio, according to Deadline. This marks Green’s first broadcast sale.
The show’s titular establishment is described “a black-owned, Washington, D.C. dive bar that has been serving drinks for the last 10 presidential administrations. This beloved cultural institution serves as a sanctuary for the congressional staffers, Metro workers, Beltway socialites, and other regulars who frequent it.”
3 Arts’ Katie Newman and Luke Maxwell will join Green as EPs.
Green worked as a lawyer-lobbyist in D.C. for seven years before pursuing a career in TV writing. Her credits include “Chelsea,” the special “John Legend and Family: Bigger Love Father’s Day,” and most recently, the 72nd Primetime Emmys. She is also writing on the upcoming second season of “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” A premiere date is TBD.
Last year, Natalie Morales made history as the first Cuban female lead of a broadcast TV program with another bar-set comedy, NBC’s “Abby’s.” Her character, an ex-Marine sergeant who runs an unlicensed bar in her backyard, was also bisexual. “Abby’s” was cancelled after one season.
