Daisy Edgar-Jones will “Feel the Earth Move” with her lead role as the Carole King in Sony’s “Beautiful.” Variety reports that the musical biopic of the legendary singer-songwriter will be directed by Oscar-nominated “The Kids Are All Right” writer-director Lisa Cholodenko.
“Daisy has a spirit and energy that I recognized as myself when I was younger,” King said. “She’s a tremendous talent and I know she’s going to give a great performance.”
Cholodenko and co-writer Stuart Blumberg are currently working on the “Beautiful” script, which will be adapted from the Grammy-winning Broadway stage show. “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” ran for five years and earned a Tony for Jessie Mueller’s portrayal of King. The musical features King’s greatest hits, including “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” and her Grammy Song of the Year “You’ve Got a Friend.”
King’s prolific career includes 25 studio albums, including 1972 Grammy winner “Tapestry,” the soft rock album holding the record most consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard 200 by a woman artist.
Edgar-Jones got her breakout role in Hulu romantic drama “Normal People,” for which landed a BAFTA nom in 2021. Her film credits include Mimi Cave’s “Fresh” and Olivia Newman’s “Where the Crawdads Sing.” The former is a black comedy about a whirlwind romance, and the latter is an adaptation of Delia Owens’s novel of the same name, and sees Edgar-Jones playing a murder suspect who grew up fending for herself in the marshes of North Carolina.
Cholodenko received an Oscar nom for penning the screenplay for “The Kids Are All Right” and won an Emmy for directing “Olive Kitteridge.” She most recently helmed episodes of “The Girl from Plainville,” a Hulu drama inspired by a texting suicide case. Elle Fanning stars.
