Dakota Fanning’s latest has secured distribution. Gravitas Ventures landed U.S. rights to Fanning-starrer “Sweetness in the Belly,” an adaptation of Camilla Gibb’s 2005 novel of the same name.
Penned by Laura Phillips (“Murdoch Mysteries”), the drama tells the story of Lily (Fanning), an orphan “who is forced to flee Ethiopia for England when civil war breaks out. She befriends Amina (Wunmi Mosaku), an Ethiopian refugee who has fled the same war. Together they begin a mission to reunite people with their scattered families,” the source details.
“Sweetness in the Belly” made its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Gravitas Ventures is planning a digital release May 8.
“Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” and “The Alienist” are among Fanning’s recent credits. She’s signed on to star in a sequel of the latter for TNT. Titled “The Angel of Darkness,” the series sees Sara Howard (Fanning) opening up her own private detective agency and seeking help from familiar faces to hunt down a killer.
Fanning will be joined by her sister, Elle Fanning, in Mélanie Laurent’s next pic, TriStar Pictures’ adaptation of “The Nightingale.” Based on Kristin Hannah’s best-selling 2015 novel of the same name, the coming-of-age story is set on the eve of WWII and centers on two sisters.
