Dakota Johnson is joining forces with the co-creator of “I Am Not Okay With This.” The actress will follow up her role in Nisha Ganatra’s “The High Note” with another comedy, starring in and exec producing “Rodeo Queens,” a mockumentary-style series created by Christy Hall. Amazon Studios snagged the project in “a competitive situation,” according to Deadline.
“Rodeo Queens” follows an ensemble of Rodeo Queen hopefuls vying for the crown. No word on who will co-star with Johnson, who broke out with the “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchise.
Hall will serve as showrunner. Emmy-nominated “Portlandia” co-creator Carrie Brownstein is directing.
Following her turn as Anastasia Steele in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” a trilogy of erotic thrillers, Johnson has worked across a wide swath of genres including horror (“Suspiria”), romantic comedy (“How to Be Single,”), neo-noir mystery (“Bad Times at the El Royale”), adventure (“The Peanut Butter Falcon”) and tearjerker (“The Friend”). She was most recently seen alongside Tracee Ellis Ross in “The High Note,” a comedy about a superstar singer and her assistant.
Hall’s supernatural coming-of-age comedy “I Am Not Okay With This” premiered to strong reviews on Netflix. No word on whether the Sophia Lillis-starrer will return for a second season.
Brownstein’s recent directing credits include episodes of “Mrs. Fletcher” and “Shrill.”
