Last week, Dame Maggie Smith was honored with a new painting of her which will hang at the National Portrait Gallery.
The portrait, painted by James Lloyd, was intended to capture the iconic actress in her “everyday mode.” Lloyd was excited to paint Smith, however Smith, at least, in the past had her own hesitations.
I learnt that Dame Maggie had been reluctant to have her portrait painted in the past, and at my first meeting with her, her opening words were, ‘Poor you’
Despite her hesitations about being painted, Smith was happy with the results. Smith is known for her roles in theater and films including her 1969 Oscar win for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She is also known for her role as Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and is currently beloved by all as Lady Grantham on Downton Abbey.
