“The Wonder Years” star and expert mathematician Danica McKellar has joined PBS NOVA’s “The Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers” for an episode of its fifth season.
McKellar, though best known for her role as Winnie Cooper on “The Wonder Years,” is also a bestselling author, internationally-recognized mathematician, and advocate for math education. She earned her mathematics degree from UCLA and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She has been honored in Britain’s Journal of Physics and the New York Times for her work in mathematics, most prominently for her role as co-author of the ground-breaking mathematical physics theorem which bears her name (The Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem). Her book, “Math Doesn’t Suck,” was part of her quest to help girls develop an interest in mathematics, especially during the formative middle school years
PBS NOVA’s “The Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers” is “working hard to change the way we view scientists.” The Emmy-nominated series features short films that help “shatter stereotypes by unveiling stunningly personal stories about many of the world’s most notable and charismatic scientists.” Previous episodes have included Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theory,” “Blossom”), Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Michio Kaku, Steven Pinker, and others. The short film on Mayim Bialik, “Blossoming to Science,” has been viewed more than three million times.
