Contrary to what most films and TV shows would have you believe, Los Angeles is diverse city. Issa Rae-starrer “Insecure” has shown audiences a different side of LA than they’re used to seeing on-screen, and the network behind the comedy has another project in the works that will offer a fresh take on the second-largest city in the United States. “KTown” is in development at HBO, Deadline confirms. Set in Koreatown, the dark comedy stars and is co-written by Greta Lee (“St. Vincent”), who will also exec produce.
“Lee will play Yumi, self-proclaimed Brentwood Barbie and daughter of the Kang family, who reconnects with her ’embarrassing’ Korean roots to become a powerful Korean-American woman,” the source details.
Other exec producers on the project include Annapurna TV’s Megan Ellison (“Detroit”) and Sue Naegle (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”).
“I think that it is a total shame that we don’t have more female directors or rather, more opportunities for them,” Lee has said. “It is unconscionable that this is the situation and it makes no sense. When I look back at my career so far, hands down my favorite jobs have been directed by or written by women and I don’t think that that’s an accident.”
“The Good Fight” “Chance,” and ” “Money Monster” are among her previous credits.
