Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini have plenty of laughing, crying, and screaming sessions in store. Netflix has renewed “Dead to Me” for a second season, Variety confirms.
Created by Liz Feldman, the dark comedy depicts the unlikely friendship between Jen (Applegate), a cynical widow and mother of two determined to solve the mystery behind her late husband’s hit-and-run murder, and Judy (Cardellini), an openhearted free spirit coping with a loss of her own.
Notoriously tight-lipped about ratings, Netflix has revealed that “Dead to Me,” which has been well-received by critics, is among the streamer’s most-viewed scripted series.
Feldman, who will reprise her showrunning duties in Season 2, has said that the writers’ room was “predominately women” and that she was “interested in telling stories that appealed to women.” Women directed eight of Season 1’s 10 episodes. “This is very much like an ode to friendship and it is absolutely inspired by my friendship with my best friend, and how we have been through some really crazy shit in life,” Feldman explained.”The kind of crazy shit that I think if we all looked at our lives and kind of broke down some of the weirder things that have happened to us, you would say to yourself, ‘Boy if I saw that in a show, I wouldn’t believe it.’”
“2 Broke Girls” and “One Big Happy” are among Feldman’s previous credits.
Applegate won an Emmy for a guest role on “Friends” and received nods for her leading role on “Samantha Who?” She was last seen on the big screen in 2017’s “A Bad Moms Christmas.”
Cardellini scored an Emmy nod for her guest spot on “Mad Men.” The “Bloodline” and “Freaks and Geeks” alumna’s recent film credits include “Avengers: Endgame,” “Green Book,” and “A Simple Favor.”
