The day after “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen announced that he would co-write the female heist thriller “Widows” with “Gone Girl” author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn, he publicized that he would collaborate with BAFTA- and Olivier Award-winning playwright Debbie Tucker Green on one of his upcoming TV projects.
McQueen and Green will co-write an untitled six-part BBC miniseries that is “epic in scope.” It will follow the lives of several black families in London over five decades, from 1968 to 2014.
“I don’t think there has been a serious drama series in Britain with black people from all walks of life as the main protagonists,” McQueen said, implying that this project would fill that gap.
Green previously wrote and directed the TV movie “Random” and her feature debut “Second Coming,” the latter starring Idris Elba, which had its world premiere at the 2014 London Film Festival. She is also the author of at least 10 plays.
