Dee Rees and Leila Gerstein Join Forces on “Saint X” Adaptation at Hulu

An Academy Award nominee and an Emmy winner are teaming up to bring “Saint X” to Hulu. Dee Rees, who scored a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nod for “Mudbound,” and Leila Gerstein, the winner of an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” are working on a series adaptation of Alexis Schaitkin’s novel for the streamer. Rees is directing and Gerstein is penning the project, per a press release.

Told in “multiple timelines and perspectives,” “Saint X” is a psychological drama that “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre. It’s a show about how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth,” Hulu hints.

Rees scored two Emmy nods for “Bessie,” an HBO TV film about blues singer Bessie Smith. Her other credits include “The Last Thing He Wanted” and “Pariah.”

“Mrs. America,” “Claws,” and “Gossip Girl” are among Gerstein’s credits.
