Desiree Akhavan’s ‘Appropriate Behavior’ Finds Distribution

We’ve been waiting for Desiree Akhavan’s wry, adventurous debut, Appropriate Behavior, to be released since we put the Sundance favorite on our “Most Anticipated Films of 2014” list back in January.

The film was back on our radar earlier this summer, when we wrote,

If there is one film to see this year, it’s Appropriate Behavior, written, directed, and starring Desiree Akhavan, the co-creator of the popular web-series The Slope and new cast member of HBO’s Girls. The film follows Shirin, a Persian bisexual woman who just separated from her partner and is trying to pull her life together, both professionally and personally. Think Girls, if Hannah Horvath were Persian, bisexual, and lived in Bushwick instead of Greenpoint. The one-liners will leave you rolling in the aisles — that is, if you’re not too busy trying to scribble them down in the dark of the theater.

According to the schedule the film’s new distributor, Gravitas Ventures, has set, Appropriate Behavior won’t be released until early next year (alas), perhaps to coincide with the Akhavan’s appearance on Girls. She will play a fellow writer in Hannah’s (Lena Dunham) MFA seminars.

During its festival run, Appropriate Behavior won a Grand Jury Award for screenwriting at Outfest.
