The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is beginning to unveil nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards. Women account for three of six nominees in the Movies for Television and Miniseries category: Ava DuVernay, Minkie Spiro, and Jessica Yu are up for the honor. The former is nominated for Netflix’s “When They See Us” and the latter two for FX’s “Fosse/Verdon.”
“When They See Us” tells the story of five young men of color — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam , Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise — who were wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park in the early ’90s.
“Fosse/Verdon” depicts the personal and professional relationship between choreographer Bob Fosse and Broadway star Gwen Verdon. Williams just snagged a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Verdon.
Three of the five documentary films up for an award are directed or co-directed by women: Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar’s “American Factory,” Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov’s “Honeyland,” and Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang’s “One Child Nation.” “American Factory” explores what happens when a Chinese billionaire buys a former GM plant in Ohio. “Honeyland” is a portrait of the last woman working as a wild beekeeper in Europe. “One Child Nation” sees Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang investigating the untold history of China’s controversial one-child policy and its impact on generations of families.

The 72nd Annual DGA Awards will be held January 25 in LA.
