DGA Awards: Mati Diop, Alma Har’el, and Melina Matsoukas Nominated for First-Time Feature Film

"Queen & Slim": Universal Pictures

The Directors Guild of America has announced more nominees for the 2020 DGA Awards. Not a single woman is in the running in the Feature Film category. More encouragingly, women account for three of five nominees in the First-Time Feature Film category: Mati Diop, Alma Har’el, and Melina Matsoukas are up for the honor for “Atlantics,” “Honey Boy,” and “Queen & Slim,” respectively.

Co-Written and directed by Diop, “Atlantics” is a supernatural star-crossed love story told against the backdrop of the migration crisis. Diop previously took home the Grand Prix at Cannes, where “Atlantics” made history as the first feature directed by a black woman to screen in Competition.

Har’el’s “Honey Boy” is written by Disney Channel alum Shia LaBeouf and loosely inspired by the “Transformers” star’s life. The Sundance winner takes place over the span of a decade and sees an actor (Noah Jupe, Lucas Hedges) reflecting on his relationship with his alcoholic father (LaBeouf).

“Queen & Slim” sees Grammy-winning music video director Matsoukas telling the story of a black couple (Jodie Turner-Smith, Daniel Kaluuya) who goes on the run after killing a white cop in self-defense. “The Chi” creator Lena Waithe penned the script.

The DGA’s TV nominees this year include Ava DuVernay, Minkie Spiro, and Jessica Yu. The former is being recognized for Netflix’s “When They See Us” and the latter two for FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” in the Movies for Television and Miniseries category.

The DGA Awards will take place January 25 in LA. Head over to Variety to check out more of the film nominees.
