Chloé Zhao’s historic awards season just reached another milestone. The Directors Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 2021 DGA Awards, and the “Nomadland” filmmaker landed a nod for Outstanding Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, making her the first woman of color to ever receive a nomination in the category. She’s joined by “Promising Young Woman’s” Emerald Fennell, marking the first time that two women have been nominated alongside one another in the category. The last woman to receive a nomination was Greta Gerwig in 2018 for “Lady Bird.”
The Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director category also includes two women nominees. Regina King is being recognized for “One Night in Miami” and Radha Blank for “The Forty-Year-Old Version.”
Zhao, Fennell, and Blank also scored BAFTA noms today.
Just five women have ever been nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, and it’s looking more and more likely that multiple women will be up for the honor this year.
The DGA Awards will take place April 10. Head over to The Hollywood Reporter to check out all of the nominees.
