Diablo Cody Will Americanize Caitlin Moran’s “Raised By Wolves” for ABC

“Raised By Wolves”

Diablo Cody is set to introduce U.S. audiences to more snarky, precocious, and hilarious teen girls. The “Juno” screenwriter and Oscar winner has teamed up with Berlanti Productions (“Supergirl”) for “Raised By Wolves,” an adaptation of Caitlin Moran’s UK comedy series, Deadline reports. The project got scooped up by ABC, where it secured a script commitment plus penalty.

The comedy series was created by Moran and her sister Caroline, and based on their childhood experiences growing up in an unconventional family that struggled to make ends meet in Wolverhampton, England.

Cody, who created Showtime’s “United States of Tara,” will pen the script for this new version of “Raised By Wolves.” Deadline writes that the half-hour, single camera series “centers on Sheila Gable, a single parent and one tough mother. Joining Sheila are her dad and five offbeat kids as they try to survive on a shoestring budget in a (not) beautiful Midwestern town.”

Berlanti Productions is run by writer-director-producer Greg Berlanti and producer Sarah Schechter, the latter of whom was a big fan of Channel 4’s “Raised By Wolves,” which aired from 2015 to 2016. The show ran for two seasons.

“As she began chasing rights to the series, Schechter reached out to Cody about joining the project as a producer,” Deadline writes. Schechter sensed that Cody would be a good match for the project, as she and Caitlin Moran “shared a similar sensibility” and the show “featured the type of central characters Cody knows and does very well — smart teenagers and a strong mother.” Cody was enthusiastic about collaborating and offered to write the adaptation. Cody “[tapped] into her Midwest upbringing to transplant the comedy from the British Midlands to middle America,” and “Caitlin Moran was involved in the process, giving notes.”

Caitlin Moran launched a career as a music journalist in her teens. She is the author of the 2014 bestselling novel “How to Build a Girl” and released “How to Be a Woman,” a critically acclaimed memoir, in 2012. Her most recent book, “Moranifesto,” is a collection of essays.

Cody co-created Tig Notaro’s upcoming Amazon series “One Mississippi,” set to debut September 9. Her other writing credits include “Ricki and the Flash,” “Young Adult,” and “Jennifer’s Body.” She made her directorial debut with 2013’s “Paradise.”
