“Jane the Virgin” breakout Gina Rodriguez has much to celebrate this week, perhaps over one of Abuela’s famous grilled cheese sandwiches. “Miss Bala,” which marks her first starring role in a studio pic, hit theaters, and now word comes that Disney’s forthcoming streaming service, Disney+, has given a straight-to-series order to “Diary of a Female President.” TVLine reports that the Golden Globe winner is exec producing the inspirational series alongside her producing partner, Emily Gipson.
Penned by series creator Ilana Peña (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), “Diary of a Female President” tells the story of a 12-year-old Cuban-American girl “as she navigates the ups and downs of middle school and her journey to becoming the future president of the United States.”
Robin Shorr (“The Middle”) will serve as showrunner on the half-hour comedy, which is expected to launch in late 2019.
Rodriguez won a Golden Globe for her role in “Jane the Virgin.” The CW telenovela returns for its fifth and final season March 27. Sci-fi “Annihilation” and Netflix animated series “Carmen Sandiego” are among her other credits. “Miss Bala” is in theaters now. Directed by Catherine Hardiwicke, the crime thriller centers on a woman who goes undercover in a drug cartel with the hopes of saving her friend, whom they are holding hostage.
