Over the weekend, it was announced that director Antonia Bird had died. She was 62.
Bird started working as an assistant in the Royal Court Theatre, working her way up to directing projects. That led her to TV projects — directing episodes of EastEnders and Casualty. Her work for the BBC opened up opportunities for her to direct multiple miniseries’ Thin Air and The Men’s Room.
Bird’s most well-known feature was Mad Love starring Drew Barrymore. She directed the horror film, Ravenous. She received a BAFTA and a Best First Feature Award from the Edinburgh Film Festival for Safe. Her feature, Priest, was originally intended to be a TV film but ended up getting a theatrical release and received critical praise.
Bird’s most recent projects included directing episodes of The Village and A Passionate Woman.
