Disney Announces Five Female-Centric Pics for 2016, Only One Directed By Woman

MoanaDisney currently has 13 films scheduled for a 2016 release, and at least five of them will feature a female protagonist: "Zootopia," "Alice Through the Looking Glass," "Finding Dory," "Queen of Katwe" and "Moana." A sixth film, the "Star Wars" prequel "Rogue One," has been speculated to star Felicity Jones, but we still don’t really know anything about the project.

Only one of those 13 films, "Queen of Katwe," has a female filmmaker attached in Mira Nair.

Two of the female-centric films will center on a girl or woman of color ("Queen of Katwe" and "Moana"), while another two feature animal protagonists.

Here are press descriptions of Disney’s female-centric films in 2016.

"Zootopia" (March 4) – In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a fugitive fox con artist and a rookie rabbit cop (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" (May 27) – Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Wonderland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. Written by Linda Woolverton.

"Finding Dory" (June 17) – The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the true meaning of family along the way.

"Queen of Katwe" (Fall 2016) – A young girl from Uganda (Lupita Nyong’o) trains to become a world chess champion.

"Moana" (November 23) – A young woman (voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) uses her navigational talents to set sail for a fabled island. Joining her on the adventure is her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui.
