Lionsgate is betting big on Shailene Woodley.
Production has yet to begin on Insurgent, the sequel that picks up right after Divergent, but Lionsgate has announced that Allegiant, the third book in Veronica Roth’s trilogy, will be split into two movies, a la Twilight and The Hunger Games.
The news of a four-movie series means that the studio is betting on two franchises with action heroines: Woodley’s Tris and Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss.
Woodley told MTV, “I am excited, but my very first thought, if I’m being honest was, ‘Okay. All right. That’s another year of kicking ass. Another year devoted to this character.’ But that’s all right, because I am honored to be Tris, and it is exciting.”
Before Divergent’s release, a Lionsgate exec told Variety, “Assuming the movie works as we expect, we like the idea of a Divergent film every March to complement our Hunger Games films every November.”
