Time to joyfully wiggle your nose. Deadline confirms a racially inclusive “Bewitched” remake is on the way at ABC. The sitcom, written by “Black-ish’s” Yamara Taylor and Kenya Barris, received a pilot production commitment.
The new “Bewitched” will center on an interracial blended family. “Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker,” the synopsis details. “They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”
Taylor and Barris are among the executive producers.
The original “Bewitched” ran on ABC from 1964-1972. It followed Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha, a witch trying — with varying degrees of success — not to use her powers in her married, suburban life. Nora Ephron directed a 2005 feature remake of the classic series starring Nicole Kidman.
Barris created “Black-ish,” a Peabody-winning ABC sitcom about a black family living in a predominantly white, affluent community. It will return for a fifth season on October 16. Barris co-created the spinoff “Grown-ish” with Larry Wilmore. It follows “Black-ish” character Zoey Johnson’s (Yara Shahidi) adventures in college.
Taylor joined “Black-ish’s” writers’ room at the beginning of Season 2. She’s also written for “Party Over Here,” “Instant Mom,” and “The Boondocks.” Taylor co-penned upcoming film “#Twominutesoffame,” a comedy about a stand-up who tries to break into movies after becoming an internet phenom. The project is currently in post-production.
