The United States’ largest doc festival has announced its 2019 lineup. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, this year’s DOC NYC program marks its largest to date, and includes two feature competition lineups: Metropolis and Viewfinders, each comprised of seven titles. Of the 14 features screening in competition, four are directed or co-directed by women, amounting to 29 percent overall, compared to last year’s 50 percent.
The Metropolis section is dedicated to stories set in New York City. Among the titles set to screen are Karen Bernstein’s “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” a portrait of Brian Belovitch, who transitioned to a woman named Tish, and then went back to being Brian again, and Beth B’s “Lydia Lunch: The War Is Never Over,” a look inside the life of trailblazing No Wave singer, writer, and actress Lydia Lunch.
Described as featuring “distinct directorial visions,” Viewfinders includes Eva Mulvad’s “Love Child,” the story of a couple who flee Iran under threat of death for their adulterous relationship, and Jaśmina Wójcik’s “Symphony of the Ursus Factory,” which sees former employees of a defunct tractor factory in Poland composing a symphony.
DOC NYC will take place November 6-15. Check out the fest’s website to see the complete lineup, which includes many, many more films helmed by women: 47 percent of the 136 features set to screen are directed or co-directed by women.
