Drew Barrymore, Amy Berg Announce New Directing Projects

Two exciting new women-directed projects were announced this week.

Amy Berg, Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, will be directing her first narrative feature. Indiewire reports that Every Secret Thing, written by writer-director Nicole Holofcener, an adaptation of Laura Lippman’s 2004 novel which focuses on two 18 year old girls released from prison after reportedly murdering a baby in their pre-teens. The murder is brought back into question when children start to disappear.

Diane Lane is attached to star as a mother of one of the girls and Frances McDormand is one of the producers.

Berg is known for her documentary Deliver Us From Evil. Her most recent project about the West Memphis 3, West of Memphis premiered at Sundance and will be released in December.

And director-actor, Drew Barrymore will be directing The End, a film that will focus on multiple people dealing with their fate on the last day of Earth. The Hollywood Reporter says that storylines will include a “sixtysomething radio personality in London intent on broadcasting until the end, a father trying to make it through the chaos in Tokyo to reach his wife and baby and a teenage couple in the American Midwest being pulled in different directions by their families.” The End is said to be a look at celebrating life not focusing on death unlike other apocalyptic films.

Barrymore, directed Whip It, will not appear in the film. She is also attached to direct How to be Single and Heist Society.

I’m really looking forward to both these projects — the combined talents of Amy Berg and Nicole Holofcener are a perfect match and I’ve been waiting for Drew Barrymore’s next project since seeing Whip It. We’ll be sure to continue to track the progress of both.
