Drew Barrymore currently stars as a flesh-eating zombie in “Santa Clarita Diet,” but the Golden Globe winner is getting back into the rom-com game. A press release has announced that she’ll star in and produce “The Stand-In.” “But I’m a Cheerleader” helmer Jamie Babbit is attached to direct.
The pic sees Barrymore playing dual roles. The story centers on Candy, a has-been movie star who gets caught for tax evasion. She hires her stand-in, Paula, to do community service in her place. The pair develop a dysfunctional, co-dependent relationship as Candy “begins to use Paula as a stand-in in all parts of her life to escape from the stressful demands of fame. Eventually Paula starts to take over Candy’s identity, career, and boyfriend, finally kicking Candy out of her own house,” the film’s official synopsis details. “Candy is forced to survive in the real world for the first time while Paula lives the celebrity life of her dreams. Until her boyfriend discovers the truth about the woman he’s sleeping with.”
Produced by Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen-Fallon’s Flower Films alongside The Exchange, the title is being introduced to buyers at this year’s European Film Market, which kicks off February 15. Sam Bain (“Peep Show”) penned the script.
Barrymore’s horror-comedy series, “Santa Clarita Diet,” will return for a second season on Netflix sometime this year. Her previous rom-com credits include “Music and Lyrics,” “50 First Dates,” and “Never Been Kissed.” She won a Golden Globe and scored an Emmy nod for her role in “Grey Gardens,” HBO’s biopic of Edith Bouvier Beale and Edith Ewing Bouvier, also known as “Little Edie” and “Big Edie.”
Babbit’s most recent feature is 2015’s “Addicted to Fresno,” a dramedy about sisters starring Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne. Her many TV credits include “Girls,” “Divorce,” and “Supergirl.” She received Emmy nominations for producing and directing “Silicon Valley.”
