Elizabeth Banks is teaming up with one of the NBA’s all-time greats for “Hoops,” a basketball drama in development at NBC. The three-time Emmy nominated actress will exec produce the potential series with LeBron James, Variety reports.
Hailing from writer and exec producer Jennifer Cecil (“Notorious”), the one-hour series centers on Stevie Decker, a former WNBA star and coach. Stevie “jumps at the chance to return to her alma mater to become the first female head coach of a men’s college basketball team. But coming home isn’t easy as her career took a toll on her family and the school she loves is embroiled in a sex scandal involving her mentor, a legendary former coach,” the source summarizes.
The project has received a script commitment with a penalty attached from NBC.
“Private Practice,” “Brothers & Sisters,” and “One Tree Hill” are among Cecil’s previous credits.
Banks was a producer on the “Pitch Perfect” franchise. She made her feature debut with the second installment of the a cappella saga. Released in 2015, the Anna Kendrick-starrer took in over $287 million worldwide. The “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later” actress will step behind the camera again for the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott (“Power Rangers”), and Ella Balinska (“Casualty”). The multi-hyphenate will play Bosley in the pic, which is set to bow in September 2019.
“Shrill,” Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of Lindy West’s memoir, is exec produced by Banks. “SNL’s” Aidy Bryant stars as an aspiring blogger. Bullied for her weight and bogged down by bad boyfriends, she decides it’s time to change her life, but not her body
